Geiranger

Geirangerfjord, the fjord of the thousand waterfalls; actually, there may be more than a thousand, there are waterfalls everywhere. It is also a vertical land, where farms cling tenuously to the steep cliffs. The tiny town of Geiranger is cozily tucked at the end of the fjord. We go for a walk through town and end up at the church; we sit for a while taking in the beauty of this fjord from high up. We wind our way back down, the many town Trolls greet us.

In the afternoon we go on a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) ride, our captain is a lovely 20-something Norwegian girl, painted toenails peak from under her heavy waterproof pants. We are suited up to the hilt although it’s not terribly clear why. Even if we fall in the water we would hardly spend enough time in it to get hypothermia given how many people and other boats are around.

We zip around the fjord approaching several of the most famous waterfalls, our captain tells us stories of the falls and of the people who, over time, have been forced to abandon their precarious farmhouses because of increasing danger from rockfalls and erosion.
