We tender to port with no particular plans and are welcome by a local lady who hands out maps. She says "go in that direction" and so we start a lovely 2.7 km walk into “town”. Well, town may be a bit of a lofty term for Leknes, there is not a single thing of interest there. But that’s ok; we go to the tourist info centre and get instructions on how to get to the open air Viking museum, Lofotr.
A real treat, 15 minutes out of town by local bus, is Lofotr. There is a faithful replica of a Viking longhouse -complete with Vikings- on the site where the remains of a real one were found, as well as a small display of archaeological artifacts. There is also a Viking boat and visitors can row like the Vikings or try their hand at archery and other similar activities. It is a fun and inexpensive way to spend our day in the Lofoten Islands.
